CONCEPT
Author in the Classroom program provides the opportunity for children in every school to engage with a real-life author of novels and children’s stories.

The Author in the Classroom would include an author visit to participating schools. Paul Toffanello is a lifelong educator and researcher with expertise in writer’s workshops, reading response strategies, and assessments that enhance student learning & achievement.

STRATEGY/OPPORTUNITIES
In conjunction with the school Principal/Vice Principal, the author would offer one or more of the following:

• Classroom presentation/ interaction & engagement with students/teacher

• Large group divisional presentation/interaction (junior/intermediate)

Teacher workshops* including but not exclusive to:

• The Reading Workshop

• The Writing Process

• *Separate cost for teacher workshop

CONCEPT
TEACHER WORKSHOP
The author may be invited as a guest speaker and/or workshop leader for teachers in the areas of reading and writing. The author will provide an overview of his years of experience from teaching middle grades Language Arts to senior secondary school English as well as provide an overview of his work as an author, and how he is able to encourage reading an inspire writing in the students he meets. He has focused reading and writing workshops from which to choose that, among other things, provides various teaching strategies for classroom use.

GUEST SPEAKER: PARENT NIGHT
Invite the author in as a guest speaker for a parent information evening focused on literacy in the home. The talk will focus on the themes of: Creating a Literature Rich Environment, Engaging Your Child in Reading, and The Parent &Teacher Partnership in Enhancing Literature. During this presentation, the author will discuss the importance of encouraging children to read and will provide evidence that reading makes kids smarter using research to support his assertions. Parents will leave the evening session with a resource for them to use in enhancing literacy in their own homes.
